Joining Fabric and Lace
Heirloom sewing incorporates several different techniques, and one is joining fabric and lace. This works on fine, lightweight fabrics like batiste, organdy and organza. Thread the machine with lightweight thread and a SINGER Hemstitching Needle (additional accessory). Set the machine for this decorative stitch. Use an Open Toe Foot (additional accessory for some models) so that the area in front of the needle is unobstructed. Fold the edge of the fabric under, then place the fabric fold next to the flat edge of the lace. Sew the main part of the stitch on the fabric, allowing the right movement of the needle to catch the heading of the lace. When finished, use a fine scissor to trim away the excess fabric allowance.
Decorative Stitching
Use this stitch to embellish your sewing projects with a single row, multiple rows, or even in combination with other decorative stitches. Experiment with various types of thread such as rayon thread, all-purpose thread, metallic thread, topstitching thread, or even 30wt and 12wt cotton. Use a needle that is appropriate for the type of thread you are using. It is also helpful to use a stabilizer to help support the stitches. Learn more about needles and stabilizers on the SINGER website.
