Fabric is a flexible material formed from natural or synthetic fibers that are woven, knit, or bonded together to create cloth. From lightweight cotton prints and warm flannel to durable canvas and specialty apparel materials, fabric comes in a wide range of fiber types, weights, weaves, and finishes — each suited to different sewing and crafting applications. The right fabric is the foundation of every successful sewing project, whether you're constructing a garment, quilting, decorating your home, or working on a craft. Browse our full fabric collection by category to find the perfect material for your next make.

Match the fabric to the project. Cotton suits quilts and easy garments, knits suit stretchy clothing, flannel and fleece suit warm items, home decor fabric suits cushions and curtains, and utility fabric suits bags and aprons. Your pattern lists recommended fabrics and weights.
Check the yardage chart on your pattern for your size and fabric width. Buy a little extra for shrinkage, matching prints and mistakes. For quilts, plan for the top, backing and binding.
Yes, for most natural fabrics. Prewashing removes finishes and lets shrinkage happen before you cut. Wash and dry fabric the way you will care for the finished item, then press it.
Woven fabric has threads crossing at right angles and little stretch. Knit fabric is made of interlocking loops, so it stretches. Knits usually need a ballpoint needle and a stretch stitch, and patterns are designed for the amount of stretch.
Width is the distance across the fabric from edge to edge, listed on each product page. Common widths are 44 to 45 inches for quilting cotton and 54 to 60 inches for home decor and some apparel fabrics. Width affects how much you need to buy.
Start with stable, medium-weight cotton. It is easy to cut, press and sew, and it does not slip or stretch. Avoid slippery, sheer or very stretchy fabrics until you have more practice.
Fabric is sold by the yard, in cut lengths or as precut bundles. The product page shows the unit and the price per unit. Some fabrics are sold in set lengths.
Precuts are coordinated pieces cut to standard sizes, such as fat quarters, charm squares, layer cakes and jelly rolls. They save cutting time and give you matching prints for quilts and crafts.
The right fabric depends on what you are making and how it will be used. Choose by fiber, weight, stretch and care. If you are new to sewing, start with stable, medium-weight cotton, which is easy to cut, press and sew.
- Quilting and easy garments: cotton fabric
- Warm items: flannel fabric and fleece fabric
- Clothing: apparel fabric
- Bags, aprons and covers: utility fabric
- Curtains and cushions: home décor fabric
- Dress-up and Halloween: costume fabric
Woven vs knit fabric
Woven fabric is made of threads crossing at right angles and has little stretch. It is easier for beginners and works well for shirts, dresses, bags and quilts. Knit fabric is looped, so it stretches and recovers, which suits t-shirts, leggings and activewear. Knits usually need a ballpoint or stretch needle and a stretch stitch.
Understanding fabric weight and width
Weight tells you how heavy the fabric is, from light voiles to heavy canvas. Pick lighter fabrics for blouses and linings, medium for dresses and quilts, and heavier for trousers, bags and upholstery. Common widths are 44 to 45 inches and 54 to 60 inches. Check your pattern's yardage chart for your width.
How much fabric to buy
Follow the yardage on your pattern for your size and fabric width. Buy a little extra for shrinkage, matching prints and mistakes. For quilts, add extra for backing and binding.
Before you sew
- Prewash natural fabrics to remove sizing and let shrinkage happen.
- Press the fabric flat before cutting.
- Match the needle and thread to the fabric.
- Use the right stabilizer if you will embroider.
Precuts, batting and patterns
Save cutting time with precut fabric such as fat quarters, strips and squares. Add batting for quilts and find a project in sewing patterns. For notions, browse zippers, buttons, elastic and trims.
Caring for your fabric
Follow the care label for each fabric. Wash cotton in cool or warm water, and avoid fabric softener on fleece to keep it soft. Store fabric folded in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.
