How to find accessories that fit your machine
Fit matters more than anything else with accessories. Presser feet, bobbins and other parts can differ by brand and model.
Essential accessories for every sewist
- Needles in the right type and size for your fabric
- Bobbins that match your machine
- Presser feet, such as a zipper foot and a buttonhole foot
- Fabric scissors, a seam ripper and measuring tape
- Pins or clips and marking tools
- Thread in the colors you use most
Accessories by project
Quilting: a walking foot, a quarter-inch foot, a rotary cutter and mat, quilting rulers and batting. Embroidery: hoops, stabilizer, embroidery thread and embroidery needles. Garments: a zipper foot, buttonhole foot, hemming feet and a dress form. Home décor and bags: heavy-duty needles, strong thread and an extension table. Machine care: a lint brush, machine oil if your manual calls for it and spare bobbins.
Genuine vs generic accessories
Genuine accessories are made to your machine's specifications. Parts that fit loosely can cause tension problems, uneven stitches or even damage to your machine. When in doubt, choose accessories listed as compatible with your exact model.
Browse by accessory type
Shop presser feet, bobbins, needles, embroidery hoops, extension tables, scissors, sewing notions and stabilizers. You can also browse tools and essentials, irons and steam presses, sewing furniture and lighting, and bags and cases to carry your machine.
How often to replace common parts
Needles should be changed about every 8 hours of sewing and at the start of each project. Bobbins and bobbin cases last a long time but should be replaced if they are bent, scratched or cause tension problems. Scissors need sharpening when they start to snag. Presser feet can last for years, but replace them if the sole is worn or damaged.
Building a starter kit
If you are new, begin with needles, bobbins, thread, scissors, clips and a seam ripper. Add a zipper foot and a buttonhole foot as your projects need them. As you take on quilting or embroidery, add the specialty feet and supplies for those crafts.
