Frequently Asked Questions - Presser Feet

The presser foot holds fabric flat against the feed dogs so it moves evenly under the needle. Different feet are designed for specific jobs, such as zippers, buttonholes, hems, quilting or gathering. Using the right foot improves stitch quality, keeps seams straight and makes tricky techniques easier.

Use a zipper foot. It is narrow, so the needle can stitch close to the zipper teeth or coil. An adjustable zipper foot moves to either side, and an invisible zipper foot has grooves that hold the coil open. Our zipper foot collection lists options by machine.

A walking foot has its own set of feed teeth that move the top layer in step with the bottom. It helps with quilting, thick or layered fabrics, slippery fabrics such as satin, knits that stretch, and matching stripes or plaids. It is mainly used for straight and gently curved stitching.

Not always. Feet attach in different ways: snap-on shanks, screw-on low-shank, high-shank and brand-specific systems. Check your machine's shank type and model before buying, and use the compatibility information on the product page. A snap-on adapter can make some feet interchangeable.

A snap-on foot clips onto a shank that stays on the machine, so you can change feet quickly without a screwdriver. Many modern machines use snap-on systems. The shank must match the foot design, so check that your machine supports the foot you want.

A general-purpose foot, a zipper foot and a buttonhole foot cover most basic projects. Add a blind hem foot for hems and a quarter-inch foot for piecing. As you try quilting or garments, a walking foot and an overcast foot are good next purchases.

A quarter-inch foot guides fabric so seam allowances stay a consistent quarter inch, which is the standard for quilt piecing. It often has a guide edge that you run the fabric against. It keeps blocks accurate and makes pieced tops fit together.

Raise the needle and presser foot lever, and switch off the machine. On snap-on systems, press the release lever to drop the foot and snap the new one on. On screw-on systems, loosen the screw, swap the foot and tighten it. Always follow your manual, and lower the foot lever before sewing.
