Shop scissors and shears for sewing. A sharp pair of fabric scissors makes cutting cleaner and faster.

Most sewists need three pairs: 8 to 10 inch dressmaker's shears for cutting fabric, small embroidery scissors or thread snips for trimming threads, and a separate pair of general-purpose scissors for paper and pattern tissue. Add pinking shears to finish raw edges, and a rotary cutter with a cutting mat if you quilt.
Shears have blades 6 inches or longer and two different handles: a small finger loop and a larger one for the whole hand. Scissors are shorter, with two matching loops. Dressmaker's shears often have an angled handle so the fabric lies flat on the table while you cut. This gives longer, cleaner and more accurate cuts.
Paper contains fibers and fillers that wear down a sharp edge quickly. Dull blades chew and fray fabric instead of cutting it cleanly, which makes seams less accurate. Keep one pair of shears for fabric only, mark it, and use an inexpensive pair for paper patterns, tape and packaging.
Wipe the blades after use, store them closed in a dry place, and avoid dropping them, since a hard impact can misalign the blades. Never cut over pins. When the scissors start to snag, fold or chew fabric, have them professionally sharpened or replace them.
Pinking shears have zigzag blades that cut a notched edge. They finish raw seam allowances on woven fabric and reduce fraying, and they give felt and craft projects a decorative edge. They are not a substitute for a serger or zigzag stitch on fabrics that fray heavily.
A rotary cutter is best for quilting and for cutting straight strips, squares and curves through several layers quickly. Use it with a self-healing mat and an acrylic ruler. A 45 mm blade is the most common general-purpose size. A 28 mm blade suits curves and small pieces, and a 60 mm blade cuts more layers at once.
Yes. Left-handed shears have the blades reversed so you can see the cutting line, and handles shaped for the left hand. Ambidextrous scissors have symmetrical handles, but they may not cut as cleanly as true left-handed ones. Check the handedness in the product description before ordering.
Use small, sharp-pointed embroidery scissors, or curved-tip scissors for appliqué. They trim jump stitches and thread tails close to the fabric without cutting the stitches. Keep a pair of thread snips next to your machine for quick trims while you sew.
Sharp, well-made scissors give clean cuts and protect your fabric. Using the right pair for each job keeps edges from fraying and makes cutting faster and more accurate. Reserve your fabric shears for fabric only, because cutting paper dulls the blades quickly.

What to look for
Match scissors to your project
Garment sewing calls for sharp shears and a good cutting surface. Quilting often pairs a rotary cutter with a mat and ruler. Embroidery benefits from fine-point scissors that trim jump stitches without cutting the fabric.
Care and storage
Pair scissors with other cutting tools
Seam rippers, rulers, cutting mats and marking pens help you cut and mark with precision. A rotary cutter and mat make quick work of squares and strips, and a clear ruler keeps cuts square.
Safe handling
Keep blades closed when not in use, hand scissors to others handle first, and store rotary cutters with the blade guard on.
Check compatibility first
Parts and accessories differ by brand, model and machine type. Look up your model number, check the product description for compatible machines, and consult your manual if you are unsure. Choosing the right fit protects your machine and gives better stitching results.
