Sew Your Fall Wardrobe

Fall is nearly upon us and with the new season comes new trends and patterns that inspire all of us to freshen up our wardrobe. Sewing your own garments can easily help you save on your closet makeover. Here are our top recommendations on what to look for, how to use, and how to sew garments that will keep you looking on-trend!

1. Look for fabric trends

One of the easiest ways to incorporate runway looks into your sewing projects is to pinpoint what kind of fabric garments are made of. This Fall (2019), animal print is all. the. rage! Combine animal-print and faux fur materials with simple-to-sew silhouettes like this knit jacket and voila - you’re trending!

2. Pick projects compatible with your skill level

Keep your sewing experience fun by choosing patterns and designs that are in line with your skill level. If you’re a beginner sewer, stick with simple, timeless sewing patterns. Feeling up for a challenge? You can push your skill level by incorporating new sewing techniques, materials, or by even using a serger to finish your seam edges which adds durability and prolongs the life of your garment. Checkout our line up of sergers on Singer.com!

3. Invest in quality materials

Sewing is a labor of love. If you’re going to spend the time dreaming, cutting, pinning, and sewing, make sure your garment will stand up to laundering and wear by investing in quality materials like fabric, zippers, and thread.

(Pro tip: That thread collection you inherited from your mother? It may be time to toss it. Holding the spool in one hand and the thread tail in the other, unroll about 12” from the spool. Pull the thread taut (even tug a little) and if the thread breaks easily, it’s probably dry-rotted from age and using it to sew your garment will likely cause it to fall apart in the wash)

4. Know your machine!

Your sewing machine has features that are designed specifically to make your sewing experience an easy one. Review your instruction manual and read about the tools (especially the presser feet) that came with your machine. Learning about these tools can help make your projects as quick and effortless as possible. Also, visit our YouTube channel for simple tips and tricks to avoid simple and common sewing mistakes!

5. Get the right machine accessories for the project

From presser feet to extension tables, machine accessories are a convenient way to achieve the highest-quality garments possible. Read over your pattern instructions for any special techniques (blind hems, french seams, etc.) and do a little research on what presser feet and accessories are right for the project.

6. Sew with a fresh needle!

A fresh needle will help your sewing experience run smoothly. Sharp, quality needles make your seams clean and keep your fabric from getting damaged in the sewing process. Shop for the perfect needle for your project right here on Singer.com!

7. Don’t forget to fit!

Before you put the finishing touches on your garment, don’t forget to try it on and mark any places you want to fit. Customize things like the hem length to your own height for that exceptional, “tailored” look you see on the runway.
